Whitchurch
"Whitchurch; old… but not Old Fashioned"
Whitchurch is a bustling market town, the oldest continually inhabited community in Shropshire.
Founded by the Romans, who called it Mediolanum - the place in the middle of the plain, Whitchurch is ideally placed for exploring Shropshire, Cheshire and North Wales.
Whitchurch Heritage Centre allows you to spend time with J.B.Joyce, the oldest clock makers in the world - established in 1690. You can unearth Roman treasure and meet a musical knight - Sir Edward German, composer of "Merrie England", and the Victorian illustrator Randolph Caldecott - often called "the Lord of the Nursery". You may well have met him before - a while back. His nursery rhymes are still being read to children today.
If you want to get out and about the Jubilee Park in Whitchurch is the starting point for five long distance walking routes including our own Shropshire Way. This will take you to the Llangollen Canal and a superb flight of staircase locks at Grindley Brook, a mile or so out of town.
Alternatively you could take one of the many town trails. They may be less demanding but are no less interesting. There's a Clock trail and Children's Town Mouse Trail too. Whitchurch Town Trails have another advantage - as they take in all of the shops and most of the pubs as well!
There are many splendid buildings including a fine Queen Anne Church - St Alkmund's, where the heart of John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, is buried under the porch, his dying request. Shakespeare made him a principal character in "Henry VI".

The last sanctuary for the Silver-studded Blue in the Midlands. The reserve is on a large Common that had been a World War II airfield. A major restoration project is re-instating heathland and grassland vegetation across much of the site.
